GOVERNMENT CANDIDATE SUCCESSFUL

SYDNEY, September 10'. The by-election for Croydon seat in the New South Wales Assembly, caused by the resignation of the former Premier, Mr B. S. B. Stevens, to contest a Federal seat, resulted in the Government candidate, Mr . David Hunter, having a comfortable victory by more than 2000 votes over the official Labour nominee, Mr George Weir.
