GENERAL HERTZOG’S MOTION LOST
(Received September 10, 8.15 p.m.) CAPE TOWN, September 10.
General J. B. M. Hertzog’s motion that the Speaker (Dr E. G. Jansen) be given power to convene Parliament if it was thought expedient, after consulting the Prime Minister (General J. C. Smuts) was defeated by 82 votes to 75. General Smuts, in a speech, said that the clearest proof of the support given to his policy was the successful reliance on volunteers for the army. “Today we have 100,000 men under arms,” he said. “I could get any number.”
