MARRIED FARM WORKERS

Increased House

Allowance

PAYMENT OF £4/12/6 A WEEK

In future the minimum weekly wage for married men engaged on farm labour will be £4/12/6..' Beginning yesterday the Government increased the house allowance for married men from 12/6 to £l. The new fate for married men under the farm labour scheme is now made up as follows: —

Commenting on the decision of the Government the registrar of the Social Security Department at Invercargill (Mr R. A. Fernandez) said that it was made to facilitate the placement of farm labour. The demand for farm labour had increased with the drive for. increased production and the supply of single men was almost exhausted. “There are probably many married men available for this class of work,” said Mr Fernandez, “but many of them have been reluctant to accept such employment because of the lower rates of pay and separation from their families. Moreover, where farmers have been unable to accommodate married men the worker has had to keep two homes going. The increased house allowance will offset such disadvantages and should overcome the objections of married men to working in the country.”
