SAVING HEIFER CALVES
SOUTHLAND SCHEME INAUGURATED
FIRST COLLECTIONS MADE LAST WEEK
A scheme for the saving of good heifer calves so that dairying production in Southland may be increased has been brought into operation by the Southland Calf Pool Committee which began its first collections of bobby calves for the season last week. The' committee received a good response to its inquiry whether dairy farmers would be prepared to make available to other farmers heifer calves of specially good quality which might otherwise be slaughtered. It also received many inquiries from farmers anxious to acquire such calves. 1 With the first collection of calves last Thursday a number were handed over to the cartage contractors specially labelled and were promptly delivered to their new owners. The scheme will result in the saving of a substantial number of calves which would probably have been sent to the freezing works had no other arrangement been made for their disposal. Provincial farmers appear to be supporting the calf pool well this season. In the first collection of the season more than 2000 calves were brought to the freezing works compared with about 1500 on the first day last year.
