SHEPHERD DROWNED

SON OF RESIDENTS OF MATAURA (United Press Association) HASTINGS, September 10. A single shepherd, Douglas McKeown, aged 22, was swept from his; horse and drowned in attempting to ford a flooded creek in the Waipawa district on Sunday. His horse was found that afternoon with the saddle wet and the saddlebags full of water. A search was begun immediately by the police and a party of farmers and the body was found in a deep hole, about half a mile below the crossing place this' afternoon. The creek is one which is almost dry in summer-time and floods considerably in the winter. After the week-end’s torrential rain in Hawke’s Bay it rose 15 feet. McKeown’s parents live in Mataura. MOTORCAR LEAVES ROAD THREE OCCUPANTS SUFFER INJURIES (United Press Association) HASTINGS, September 9. When a five-seater car in which they were travelling left the main road at Pakipaki and crashed into a concrete culvert, the occupants, two young women and a man, were all injured The victims were:— Frank O’Rourke, single, aged 25, of Tekura, near Otane; severe head injuries; condition fairly serious. Mrs Mary Jane Richardson, aged 23, of Racecourse road. Waipukurau; facial cuts and shock. Miss Miriam Christensen, aged 19, of Takapau road, Waipukurau; facial cuts and shock. Neither of the women is seriously hurt. The injured persons were taken to the Napier Hospital by ambulance. WOMAN DIES FROM BURNS (United Press Association) MASTERTON, September 9. Miss Jean Elder McMaster, aged 26, only daughter of Mr and Mrs R. W. McMaster, of Mastertbn, whose frock caught alight through contact with an electric heater while she was preparing to go to a dance on Wednesday night, died yesterday in hospital. ELDERLY ' MAN KNOCKED DOWN

An elderly man named Thomas Shaw, living at the comer of Dee and Lowe streets, was knocked down by a motorcar in Dee street between Yarrow and Leet streets early last evening. He was admitted to the Southland Hospital suffering from abrasions.
