BALFOUR BRANCH.
MONTHLY MEETING
The monthly meeting of the Balfour branch of the Farmers’ Union was held on Saturday night, Mr Cowie presiding over an attendance of 15 members. A letter from the Lumsden branch was read inviting Balfour members an address by Mr Tennant, lijield Instructor, on June 11. The Lumsden branch to be thanked for the invitation and as many as can find it convenient will be present. The chairman and secretary reported that so far they had not been able t’o dispose of the fencing round the experimental plot. The chairman thought they should have the support of the mercantile firms in the matter of getting the Railway Department to concrete the trucking yards, stating that if the Department took into consideration the large number of sheep that go through the yards each year under very disagree.able conditions, it would expedite the work One member said that he was prepared to drive his stock to Riversdale, where much better conditions prevailed. It was left in the secretary’s hands to get advice cards appertaining to the business of the branch printed. A pamphlet from Mr E. J. Fawcett, economist, on primary industries of New Zealand received severe criticism. The question of the Power Board guarantee was discussed. It was finally agreed to send a remit to the eub-executive meeting to come before the Provincial Conference that it approach the Southland Electric Power Board regarding the,individual consumer’s guarantee. The chairman was thanked for his interesting and fully detailed report of the Provincial Conference.
