DIPTON DOG TRIALS

; TWELFTH ANNUAL MEETING A SUCCESSFUL FIXTURE.

(From Our Winton Correspondent.)

The 12th annual fixture of the Dipton Collie Club was held on Messrs A. Gerrard and Sons’ property on Tuesday and Wednesday. The trials commenced on Tuesday morning and at noon on Wednesday the maiden and all comers’ events were concluded. The entries were numerous in all events, and it was impossible to compete the seven events by Wednesday evening, so the trials were continued on Thursday. The trials were held in fine weather, but a bitterly cold wind prevailed, making conditions very unpleasant for spectators and competitors alike, but this did not affect the attendance of the public. The course which had been selected on Messrs Gerrard’s property was an ideal one, and some excellent manoeuvres were witnessed. Competitors were present from nearly all parts of Southland, and the visitors shared honours with local competitors. The popularity of this club is shown by the excellent entries that have been received for the last two fixtures, necessitating three days’ trials.

The president, Hr C. Gray, with an enthusiastic committee, worked hard to conclude the fixtures in good time, but he had an impossible task in trying to finish the trials on Wednesday evening owing to the large number of entries in each event. Mr A. D. Finlayson was"' a very capable and obliging secretary', while Mr J. Scott as judge gave his decisions promptly and to the satisfaction of all concerned. Mr W. Nevin acted as timekeeper and Mr J. Thomson as judge’s assistant. To mark the opening of the trials an excellent concert and dance was held in the Dipton Hall on Tuesday evening. A good attendance was present, and a delightful concert was given by Aitcheson’s party. Following are the results:—
