LUMSDEN NOTES

RUGBY SUB-UNION. (From Our Correspondent.) A meeting of the Northern Rugby SubUnion was held on Tuesday when the following delegates were present: Messrs T. Small (chairman), F. Belesky, M. Rasmussen, T. Condon, J. Kelly, L. Guyton, W. Collins, A. Cameron and N. McDonald. Mr E. Ottrey, secretary of the . West Otago Sub-Union, wrote stating that the annual match, Northern v. West Otago, would be fulfilled, but it was too early in the season to arrange a definite date. It was considered by his sub-union that July 12 might be a suitable date. It was decided to refer to the matter on receipt of the date of the Sports Trust Cup matches. The secretary of the Northern District Ladies’ Hockey Association wrote stating that a hockey tournament would be held at Balfour on June 14 and requested that the football fixtures be arranged to avoid clashing. The fixtures committee reported that no fixtures had been arranged to take place at Balfour on that day. Owing to the fixtures being postponed for the Test match on June 21 it was deemed inadvisable to cancel all the matches on the preceding Saturday. s Mr A. F. Kennard, secretary of the. Central Sub-Union, forwarded the conditions governing the competition for the Stewart Cup and stated that the date of the match would be held over until after the Sports Trust Cup matches. , The secretary of the Balfour Football Club wrote drawing the sub-union’s attention to the fact that the Waikaia senior team defaulted to Riversdale on May 10 and played a second grade home match with Balfour. The letter caused a great, deal of discussion. Mr Guyton (Riversdale) stated’that it was unfair to the Riversdale Club to have the match at Riversdale abandoned in favour of a second grade game at Waikaia.. Messrs Hickey and Condon (Balfour) stated that it was not in the best interests of the game to allow a first grade team to default and play the second grade team. Mr W. Collins (Waikaia) explained that al the last minute the Waikaia seniors could not field a teani and the second grade players were unwilling to travel. It was decided to circularize clubs to the effect that first grade engagements must be fulfilled before second grade matches. It was decided to hold three rounds for the senior grade and four rounds for the junior competitions. The third- round of the second grade competition will not commence until June 28> '

The question of holding seven-a-side tournaments was held over until receipt of dates of Sports Trust Cup matches.

That it be a recommendation to the subunion to endeavour to form a referees’ association was a suggestion received from the Balfour Club.

W. Patterson (Lumsden) applied for a regrade from senior to junior.—Granted. The following transfers were granted:— R. Lee from Orepuki to Waikaia; N. Belaney from Balclutha to, Country Pirates subject to clearance being in order.

Mr _N. McDonald submitted the following fixtures .for the schools competition: — May 30.—Lumsden v. Balfour at Balfour; Riversdale a bye.. — June 6—Riversdale v. Lumsden at Lumsden; Balfour a bye., June 13.—Balfour V. Riversdale at Riversdale; Lumsden a bye. : . June 20.—Balfour v. Lumsden at Lumsden ;, Riversdale a bye, June 27.—Lumsden v.
