CITY AFFAIRS.

To the Editor.

Sir,—As yet there is no sign of a small shelter shed at the south terminus. I spoke to a councillor about this not long since and he says the cars don’t pay. Well, I feel sure it is not the fault of the terminus people. The cars are pretty full generally and more ~»t on at the second section terminus than at the first. A lot of ratepayers of this city have to walk near half a mile from every direction and if they just miss a car they have to stand about, sometimes in the rain, from ten to fifteen minutes, which is not a joke for old people or young ones with small children. It would not cost much; about £5 in iron and £5 in timber for studs, plates and a seat and the cost in labour would not be much. Perhaps we had better get out a subscription list and leave it at Miss Dixon’s shop at Elies Road. Something will have to be done.

Again, the footpaths are getting in a horrible state. Has the council no spare tar? I have been told that there are scores of tons in hand, but the council will not use it. Why doesn’t the council discuss matters so we can read about them in the Press. We can’t all go to the meetings and then probably some one will suggest some use for the tar. To my mind the council is looking towards the roads for motor cars, more than the footpaths for pedestrians. Our footpaths under the South Invercargill Council were attended to yearly and were never as bad as they are now and we only had half the rates to pay. Of course, there are more inspectors and sub-inspectors and other staff adjuncts in the citv. In old South Invercargill three men a horse and cart did all the work for one of the biggest boroughs in New Zealand. —I am, rfC '’ M. THOMAS. South Invercargill, May 20, 1930.
