BEAM WIRELESS

IMPROVED SYSTEM. DISPENSING WITH THE OPERATOR. PICTURES MAY BE TRANSMITTED. (Rec. 5.5 p.m.) London,, January 18. A Marconi expert, Mr G. M. Wright, is perfecting a system of facsimile telegraph transmission, dispersing with a key-tipping operator, thus reducing the possibility of error and saving both time and money. A written or typewritten message is simply placed on a cylinder, and is duly reproduced in facsimile at the receiving station to which it is despatched by directional wireless. Marconi’s say that the system is only workable in conjunction with beam wireless, and therefore will be one of the systems used in inter-Empire services while purely line drawings could be transmitted. The despatch of half-tone pictures is not yet within range.—The Times.
