CROSBREDS ADVANCE FTVE PER CENT. KEEN DEMAND FROM CONTINENT. London, January 18. At the wool sales there was an excellent selection of greasy combing merinos and a fairly representative lot of scoureds. The bulk of the crossbreds were medium lower sorts. There was a large attendance and good competition. Germany was the principal operator. Good greasy merinos met strong Continental competition. Prices were from par to five per cent, above December closing rates. Ordinary average sorts and scoureds were unchanged. Crossbreds met strong Continental and Yorkshire demand at par to five per cent, advance. New Zealand clips: “Tarata” top 174 d, averaged 15id. —A. and N.Z. THE SYDNEY SALES. HARDENING TENDENCY MAINTAINED. RECORD PRICE FOR MERINOS. (Rec.. 1.25 a.m.) Sydney, January 19. At the wool sales, under general and animated competition, the market level was fully equal to that of the sales of the previous week. The hardening tendency on the finer grades was further accentuated. There was a strong market for comebacks and crossbreds, which ruled firm at late rates. Greasy Merino sold to a Sydney record price of 40^d. —A. and N.Z.
