SUMMER SCHOOL
AUSPICIOUS OPENING. TEACHERS HAVE ROUGH CROSSING. Despite a very rough crossing yesterday morning, in which all the unpleasantness of a voyage over Foveaux Straits in the Theresa Ward was in evidence, it was a remarkably cheerful lot of teachers who assembled in the afternoon to be formally welcomed to Stewart Island by representative citizens. The Director of the School, Professor J. Lawson, returned thanks on behalf of the teachers and lecturers, and delivered a most interesting and eloquent inaugural address. The first of the series of lectures was then proceeded with, the keenest interest being evinced by the teachers. The programme of lectures is not by any means an arduous one. After an early morning bathe and breakfast, two lectures are attended each morning. In the afternoon launch trips or walking tours are indulged in, all parts of the island being on the itinerary. The early part of the evening will be devoted to lectures, these being followed by impromptu dances.
