BOATING TRAGEDY
GALE SWAMPS SMALL CRAFT. THREE PERSONS DROWNED. (Rec. 8.50 p.m.) Sydney, January 19. While a party of four boys and four girls were boating on Tuggerah lakes, they were overtaken by a southerly gale, which reached a velocity of fifty miles per hour. The boat was rapidly swamped by the waves, and the party decided to overturn the craft and cling to the bottom. This was done, but it was not long before two of the youths lost their grip and were drowned. One girl twice lost her hold but was brought back. On the third occasion, however, she was lost sight of and drowned.
The boat eventually drifted ashore with the five survivors.—A. and N.Z.
