ABOUT PEOPLE
Dr Emeet W. Brown, F.R.S., Professor of applied Mathematics, in the Yale University, and Director of the Observatory (brother of Mrs J. C. Yorke, of Now Plymouth), has been awarded the Bruce Medal, one of the highest honours that can be bestowed on an astronomer. This medal, which is presented once in two years, is held now by only five astronomers, having been presented fifteen times since its foundation by Miss Catherine Bruce 30 years ago. Dr Brown was a member of the party of scientists who visited New Zealanad in 1314.
Lieutenant A. E. Byrne, of the Otago Regiment. N.Z.E.F., is at present visiting Invercargill in connection with the history of the regiment that he is writing. The cost of the work is being borne by the regiment with the aid of a subsidy from the Government and it is intended that it shall cover the doings of the three battalions, so that both Otago and Southland will have a keen interest in it. Lieutenant Byrne is an experienced journalist and he has been devoting the whole of his time to the compilation of this history which is expected to be ready for publication shortly.
