MILD SMALLPOX
A CASE FROM WINTON. RUSH FOR VACCINATION. The .smallpox epidemic took another turn yesterday, when the Health authorities received notification of a fresh case, and the infection was traced to Winton, The patient was admitted to hospital suffering from another complaint ten days ago, and has since developed smallpox. A suspected case was reporter! from Crinan street, and the patient has been isolated at Kew for observation.
The Health Officer, Dr Ritchie, visited Winton yesterday afternoon to make inquiries regarding the case reported from that district, and made arrangements for Ihe vaccination of the school children and any of (he general public who choose to submit to the treatment.
When asked how many people had been vaccinated in Invercargill, Dr Ritchie replied that a conservative estimate was 2000, judging by the amount of lymph used. So great had been the rush that they had used up all the available local supplies as well as those from Dunedin, and as a result the Government vaccinator had to suspend operations last night. He was pleased that the public wore making use of the only known safeguard against the disease, and responding to the Department’s request to submit to vaccination.
