PENSIONS LIABILITY
AN INTERESTING RETURN. {Per United Press Association.; DARGAVILLE, June 2. The Hon J. G. Coates, Minister of Public Works, arrived here yesterday. During the day several deputations were received, and in the evening a smoke concert was tendered the Minister by the Mayor and members of various local bodies. There was a large attendance. The Mayor, Mr R. J. Hornblow presided. The following interesting figures in regard to war pensions to March 31 hist were given by the Minister: — Permanent pensions: (Soldiers! 2130, pensions annual value £125,510, average £59 per annum.
Temporary pensions, 23,144, value £1,223,342; average £52. dependents, 1517, value £88,473, average £SO; widows’ 2075, value £238,090; children’s, 1452, average £IXS; other dependents of deceased, 5705, value £102,347 ; children’s 2315, average .£34.
The total number was 34,571, and the value £1,869,265, an average per annum of £54. The total payments in respect of war [Tensions during the year ending March 31 last amount to £1,773,642. Other payments for pensions were as follows; Old age, £732,966; widows’ £136,815; Maori War pensions, £45.095 ; miners’ pensions, £16,652. Total, £2,705.160. The Minister left this morning for Auckland.
