HOSPITAL BOARDS

CONFERENCE AT WELLINGTON. (Per United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, June 2. The Hospital Boards’ conference adopted a recommendation that the principle of the proportion scheme for subsidies on rate levies proposed by the Government be approved, but that the minimum rate of subsidy be I2s 6d in the £. An amendment moved by the Waikato Board that the minimum should be 15s in the £ was lost by 21 votes to 11. The conference also adopted remits to empower a local authority to levy a special rate in its district upon petition for the purpose of subsidising or paying the salary of a district nurse; urging the introduction of a short Act placing Hospital Boards on an equal footing with other local bodies as regards borrowing powers; affirming that Hospital Boards should be exempt from stamp duties on cheques, and advocating that all supplies for the maintenance and upkeep of hospitals be procured and distributed by the Department.
