A London Press Association cable report* the death of Major-General Sir Alexander Tulloch, a former commandant of the Victorian Forces, at the age of 82. The Hon. C. J. Parr, in continuation of his Taranaki tour, reached New Plymouth yesterday afternoon. He will remain there till Friday morning, dealing with Ipcal educational requirements, says a Press Association telegram.

Among the travellers who landed at Auckland from the s.s. lonic last week was Sir Arnold Gridley, K.8.E., who was controller of the electric light and power supply in Great Britain during the war years, and is taking a rest after a strenuous time. In the course of a chat the visitor stated that while he was primarily on holiday he was interested in what he had heard of the hydro-electric possibilities of the country, and proposed studying the private, municipal and State enterprises established in this line. Most of the electric supply stations in Britain, he stated, were municipal enterprises, and very few of these were hydroelectric, "the few exceptions being in Wales and Scotland. Sir Arnold disclaimed any special knowledge of hydro-electricity, remarking that his interest lay chiefly in learning what were the possibilities of development in the Dominion and how our advantages in this direction are being availed of.

Lieut.-Colonel H. W. Bryant, V.D., who died at Brighton (Victoria) on May 6, aged GO years, was a popular member of medical and military circles. His father, Mr James Bryant, was a well-known cricketer in the early days of Victoria, and his uncle, Mr W. J. Hammersley, was for many years sporting editor of The Australasian. After taking the degrees of L.R.C.P. and L.R.C.S. in Edinburgh, Lieut. -Colonel Bryant returned to Melbourne, and practised first at Williamstown and afterwards in Collins street. As a surgeon he was long connected \Vith the military forces, and previously with the Naval Brigade. For his work in command of No. 1 Australian Stationary Hospital, which did magnificent service under almost heart-breaking conditions in the early days of the Gallipoli campaign, Lieut.Colonel Bryant received mention in Sir lan Hamilton's dispatches. The strain, responsibilities, and hardships of that time told severely on his health. General Sir William Birdwood is expected io arrive at Wellington on Monday, May 01, by the Manuka from Sydney, and after visiting Christchurch, Ashburton, Timaru, and Oamaru, will reach Dunedin by the 9.25 p.m. express on Saturday, June 5. On Sunday he will be free, and on the Monday will be given a civic reception and a reception by the returned soldiers. He will Leave for Invercargill by the 8.30 express on Tuesday morning, and after a few days there returns to Wellington, proceeding from there to other places in the North Island. Lieutenant V. G. Jervis, N.Z.S.C., has been appointed to act as General Birdwood’s staff officer during the tour. There will be no military parades, as the visit is purely a private one. General Birdwood is being invite,d to become a member of the Dunedin R.S.A., it being understood that the N.Z.R.S.A. have decided to give the Dunedin Association this honour. At a meeting of (lie executive Messrs Jones, Watson, Moir, McCrac, Wood, Foley and Colquhoun were appointed a committee to arrange a fitting reception on the part of the returned men of Otago.
