Mr H. D. Heather has been elected chairman of the Auckland Harbour Board for the sixth time in succession. Dr W. E. Carswell, of Dunedin, purposes paying a visit to Great Britain and the Continent. He will be absent for about 12 months. The Hon. J, A. Hanan, M.P. for Invercargill, has accepted an invitation to open the new Kindengarten school at Dunedin on May 22. Mr A. B. Cord, of the Queenstown Post Office, who has been on sick leave for some time, will resume duty this week as acting-postmaster. Miss Freda Wesney, of Invercargill, a pupil of Miss Search, has been officially informed that she has passed her examination for the degree of A.T.C.L. Mr S. Craig, who intends to settle at Whangarei, was accorded a hearty send-off at the Invercargill railway station yesterday by his numerous friends and associates on public bodies. As the train pulled out three ringing cheers were given for Mr Craig. The Rev. Charles Gilbert Wilcox, recently from Knox College, who is well known in district Presbyterian circles, has accepted a call to Owaka Presbyterian Church (says the Wyndham Farmer). He will reside at Pounawea, until such time as a manse is built for him. Mr J. B. Merrett, secretary of the New Zealand Poultry Association, who is leaving on a visit to California, was entertained prior to his departure by his friends in Christchurch and presented with, a travelling rug as a token of their esteem. The following inspectors for the purposes of the Dairy Industry Act have been appointed .-—Messrs Matthew Robert Findlay, Frederick Harold Taplin, James Alexander Griffith, Arthur Ingram, George Reid, Rob-i ert Donald Munro, George Albert Edward Sands, and William Wilson. The Board of Governors of the Christchurch Technical College has appointed Mr J. B. Garnett, B.Sc. (London), N.DA. (Honours), to the position of agricultural instructor to the College. Mr Garnett is at present assistant lecturer at the Harper Adams Agricultural College, Shrewsbury, England. Mr William Smart, who has just retired from the position of superintending engineer to the Union Steam Ship Company on superannuation, joined the company’s service in August, 1883, as third engineer of the Penguin (says the Otago Daily Times). He served in many of the company’s steamers as second, and subsequently' as chief engineer. In April, 1899, he was appointed superintending engineer to the company for Australia, and in June, 1903, was appointed general superintending engineer at headquarters, a position he held with conspicuous ability up to the time of his retirement. The following new staff appointments are announced by the Union Steam Ship Company;—Mr G. H. Morgan, manager at Newcastle (NJ3.W.), has been appointed to the charge of the Trans-Pacific department in the Sydney office. Mr D. Carter, manager for the company at Fiji, has been appointed manager of the Newcastle branch. Mr A. J. Soutar, manager at Devonport (Tasmania), will take over the position of manager at Fiji. Mr James Smith, late superintendent engineer for the company at Sydney, has been appointed to the position of superintending engineer at headquarters, in place of Mr William Smart, who has just retired. Mr Charles Eastwood, who is severing hia connection with the firm of Messrs Thom- ! son and Bridger in order to take an importj ant position in Wellington, was farcwelled ;by a large gathering of the Invercargill I Rowing Club members last night. Mr Eaat- | wood has been connected with the club in j various responsible positions for a number ] of years, and the many eulogistic speeches ; were a warm testimony to the esteem in j which his work in this connection was held. , The guest was presented with a threc-pieca ; silver plated cruet set for Mrs Eastwood, i and a case of Loewe pipes for himself. Mr i Eastwood suitably responded. The presen- ■ tation was made by the vice-president of i the club, Mr J. Martin, who presided in the absence of the president (Mr S. Craig). A valedictory gathering was held last [ Wednesday at Mrs Brodie’s residence, Elies road, by the ladies of the First Church Branch of the P.W.M.U., in honour of Mrs Evan Bissett, who leaves New Zealand next month for Scotland. Mrs Bissett has been a consistent and very efficient worker for the Union during her stay in Invercargill, having at various times acted as President. ; Eulogistic references were made by several ! members to the good work done by the i guest, and sincere wishes were expressed that her future in the Homeland would be full of happiness. As a memento of their goodwill a serviceable handbag was presented fay the president (Mrs J. L. Robinson ) to Mrs Bissett, who said she regretted that she was severing her connection with : her fellow-workers and thanked them for their kindly remembrance of her. j A Christchurch Press Association telegram states that Sir Joseph Ward was the guest yesterday afternoon of the Canterbury members of the Legislative Council i and House of Representatives. Each j of those present made a speech of a nonpolitical character wishing Sir Joseph and Lady Ward all future happiness and a ! pleasant voyage. The Hon.
