INFLUENZA
THE AUCKLAND EPIDEMIC. YESTERDAY’S NOTIFICATIONS (Per United Press Association.) AUCKLAND, May 11. During the 24 hours ended at noon to-day 193 cases of influenza were notified in thi Auckland Health district. Of these cases nine were severe, comprising five in the suburbs, three at Thames, and one at Hamilton. THE LOCAL POSITION. NOTIFICATIONS INCREASED. Judging from the numbers of notifications received by the Health Department, influenza is increasing in Southland. During April there were 105 notifications, and fop the present month they number 80, no fewer than 44 having been received from Saturday to Monday (inclusive). Most of the cases are described as mild, but there are two pneumonic included in the last mentioned figures. The majority arc located in the town. School attendances locally are being considerably affected, although whether or not this is due to influenza it is difficult to say. So telling were the lessons of the epidemic that parents are taking no risks, and when a child develops even a cold there is a strong tendency in all homes to keep it away from school. The North Invercargill School is particularly affected.
