London, Dec. 4. The Pope has issued an encyclical which censures the German and Swiss Governments. The duel between the German generals is contradicted. -General Sir Garnet Wolseley describes the Ashantees as utterly demoralised after their late defeats. The disaster to the French ship Villehavre occurred at the Azores, where, during the night, she came into collision with the ship Loch Earn, from Glasgow. Eigbtj seven passengers were saved. Dec. 6. There has been a fall of 2d on inferior parcels of wool. A brisk competition was maintained yesterday ; altogether 43,400 bales have been sold. The sales close on the 12th met., and the February sales commence on the 12th of that month. The corn market is firm, and foreign arrivals large. The bank reserve is favorable. Colonial securities firm. Copper, £92, £93. Transactions in tin ore of an average character at £115. New York, Dec. 4. President Grant's message to Congress is friendly, but denounces the misrule and excesses of the Cubans, with whom it is •dangerous to continue relations. On the Virginius question it demands a satisfactory and honorable adjustment. Dec. 6. America has resolved to extend the utmost indulgence to Spain in respect to the Cuban affair j but the matter of the Virginius Expedition will be referred to Congress to decide on any ultimate action. Madbid, Dec. 5. The Captain-General of Cuba has telegraphed to the Government at Madrid that it is impossible to immediately surrender tbe survivors of the Virginius expedition to America, as the public are opposed to it, and the attempt would cause a frightful commotion. Th» Captain- General has Bince resigned. London, Dec. 9. The Emperor of Austria has created Mr Tallerman a Knight Grand Cross of the Order of Francis Joseph for his services in the introduction of Australian meats. Major-General Sir Garnet Wolseley, the coinmander-in-chief at the Gold Coast, is ill. Dec. 10. A Conservative has been elected for Eieter in tbe room of Sir J. D. Coleridge, elevated to the Bench. New Tokk, Dec. 9. The feeling in America with respect to the Cuban affair is calmer. Congress is supporting the Cabinet in the refusal to recognise the belligerency of the Cubans as against tbe Spaniards. The conduct of General Sickles, the American Minister to Spain, having been disapproved of, he resigned. Dec. 10. President Grant approves of General Sickles's conduct, and has refused to accept his resignation. The Spanish authorities have decided upon surrendering the Yirginius and the survivors of the expedition on 18 th December. Paew, Dec. 10. Marshal Bazaine has been adjudged guilty by the court martial of the charges brought against him, and has been condemned to military degradation and death. Point de Galle, Dec. 10. The P. and O. steamer Ellora left Galle with an extra Australian mail for Melbourne at daylight on Bth inst.
