INVERCARGILL: FRIDAY, DEC. 19, 1873 The enquiry into the charge made by the Rev. W. Coleman, a Roman Catholic priest, against the head-master of the Tokomairiro Government School, of having flogged (notwithstanding the remonstrances of the assistant master) a Roman Catholic boy for refusal to attend at Bible-reading and prayers, proves what all sensible persons expected, namely, the utter groundlessness of the charge. His Excellency the Governor having instructed Mr J. P. Maitland, a Justice of the Peace resident at Tokomairiro, to investigate the matter, that gentleman's report has been published, showing that all the evidence is entirely against the truth, of the charge. In justice to the Rev. W. Coleman, it must be stated that the charge, although made by him, was not made as of a fact within his own knowledge, but as of a report which bad reached him. It appears somewhat strange that so grave an allegation should have been made by a gentleman presumably of a considerable amount of intelligence and education, I
