Melbottbne, Dec. 13. About 25,000 acres of land recently selected by dummies on runs in the Wimmera hare been thrown open for reaelection. The population of the Colony on the 30th September was 785,702. Mr William Fateraon Muir, maiager of the Land Mortgage Bank of Victoria, died suddenly on the 12th. A Victorian-bred shorthorn bull, from the herd of Mr Robert M'Dougall, baa been sold for 1,000 guineas to Mr Eichard Bouse of New South Wales. The weather has recently been oppressively hot, the maximum temperature in the shade varying from 90 to 101 degrees. Several cases of sunstroke are reported. It has been arranged that the English cricketers shall, in the firHt instance, try their strength against 18 Victorians. A serious riot has occurred at Clunes, '
where, owing to the miners of the Lothair Company having been on strike for the past 14; weeks, an attempt -was made to introduce Chinese to take their places. A meeting wns held, and it was resolved to resist to the utmost the introduction of Ihe Chinese. Axes 'and picks, sticks and waddies of all descriptions were brought into service, and the streets were paraded by bodies of men. The Mongolians were being conveyed to their destination in five coaches, escorted by a party of mounted police, and when it became known by which road they were likely to arrive, over 1000 ntfners, accompanied by troops of women and children, proceeded about a mile out of town, and arrested the progress of the intruders by erecting a barricade composed of ploughs, drays, timber, stone, bricks, Ac. A collision took place, which ended in the police and Chinese being compelled to retire, several parties being \ injured in the melee. The Government intend to institute proceedings against the persons who took part in the riot. Sydney. The Government has removed Mr Loder from the magistracy, owing to his conviction for riot. Professor Leversedge confirms the reported discovery of diamonds near Tambaroora. The largest found weighs three carats, and is of excellent color. Mr James Asher, of the Manila Station, has been killed by his horse throwing him against a tree. The Rev. Dr West, editor of the Sydney Morning Herald, was seized with a fit whilst returning from the office in his carriage, and died within a few hours after. The Triennial Parliaments Bill has passed the Assembly. 700 tons of ore were received from the tin mines last month. Pout Dabwin. The warden's reports are good, and show surface gold on the new field at Pine Creek. Many licenses have been granted for alluvial and reefing claims. Scarcely any labor is employed on the reefs, and there will be very little crushing this year. Small quantities of gold are in the hands of private diggers. Adelaide. A petition signed by 2,000 persons has been presented to the Assembly in favor of a railway to the Murray. Bidgway has been found guilty of the murder of Burt on the Coonattoo run, and sentenced to death. Very little wheat has been destroyed by the late bush fire. Twenty-one thousand acres of land were selected during the month of November. The Government have extended the time for resuming work in the claims at the Northern Territory until Ist March.
