THE MOUNT BEAUMONT COAL.

(TO THB EDITOB OF THE TIMES.) Sib, — I beg to call your attention to the snbject of the coal deposits, and their quality, that exist in the various provinces. I have given a great deal of attention to the various statements of the quality and descriptions given in the public prints, and my personal knowledge of the subject, causes me to wonder why the public or the Government do not take action to develop* the Mount Beaumont coal, which will class with coal that the Government intend to open up by putting a railway to. Why not take the same trouble about this coal, of which there are millions of tons, and many square miles, .aitly wanting the means to bring it to market ? Thia coal will class with the Collingwood, Malvern Hills, Preservation Inlet, aDd Waikato coals, and is a better and clearer coal than some of thd above-mentioned coals for stationary engines and railway uses. I see that the Government w giving £1000 to put in a level drive to ascertain if there is a sufficient quantity of coal to warrant a railway being made to Collingwood. Why ? The coal in the locality above-mentioned, Mount Beaumont, can be seen without any expenditure for driving or sinking. It is only the railway that ii required. — I am, &c., ( T. J. Thompson.
