NEW ZEALAND SCHOLARSHIPS.
Twenty.two scholarships, ©f values stated below, will be open for competition in May next, the examinations commencing on the second Monday io that month. One scholarship worth £70 will be awarded in each of the following subjects: — Clas ies, Mathematics, Physical Science, modern languages other than English, history and English literature ; and the remainder will each be of the value of £45. The regulations only vary from those of last year in two important particulars, viz., no candidate under fifteen years cf age will be admitted to a scholarship— last year the minimum was sixteen years — and no scholarship can be held by a person after he has attained his twenty-first year : previously there was no limit of age. We publish for general information the subjects in which the candidates will be examined, together with th* test books recommended :— Cxjuwios. — JB chylua, Prometheus Vinctus ; Thucydides, book vi., Sicilian Expedition ; Virgil, Georgict ; Livy, book i. MatexmaticS. — Arithmetic ; Algebra ; Euclid, books i., ii., iii, iv., v., vi. ; Plane Trigonometry. P&tsicax SciSHCa. — Oliver's Lessons in Botany (second edition : Macmillan, May, 1869). Zoology and Physiology— Nicolson's introductory text-books for junior classes (Blackwood, May 1, 1871) ; Huxley's elementary lessons on Physiology (Macmillan). Geology— Page's introductory text-book (Blaokwoed, July, 1869). Nataral Philosophy — Ward's elements of Natural Philosophy, especially for the use of schools. Physical Geography — Hughes's Physical Geography. Chemistry — Smith's Inorganic Chemistry for elementary classes (fourth edition, Longmans, 1872). Modebk Langtuobs, to. — English language and literature — Shakespeare, Julius Cesar ; English essay on a subject to be given. History — The social and political history of tbe countries of Europe from ID. 724 to A.D. 1106. Modem languages. — Fenelon, Telemaque ; translation into English and from English into French ; questions in grammar and construction ; Schiller, Thirty Years* War ; translation into English and from English into German ; questions in grammar and construction.
