RIVERTON.

(FROM OTXR OWJST COBRESrONDENT ) On Monday, 23rd mat., Horomanu Patu and George Howell appeared at the ' Courthouse here before H. M'Culloch, Eeq., 8.M., and J. Petchell, Esq., J.P., to answer a charge of unlawfully and ! forcibly entering a house occupied by J ohn Watson (acting as servant to the i Corporation of Kiverton), and known as , the .Ferry-house. Mr Wade appeared for the prosecution ; Mr Macdonald, who had been retained for the defendants, was unable to attend from illness. Mr . John Parker wai sworn as interpreter, j After several witnesses had been examined for the prosecution, Horonaanu Patu rethat the case might be postponed \to enable him to obtain counsel, and to summon further witnesses. Mr Wade ■aid that the adjournment should have been applied for before the proceeding* had been commenced, but intimated that, as defendants were unprovided with legal assistance, he would raise no objection to the adjournment if the Court was disposed to grant it. A question was, however, raised regarding the costs of the adjournment, and defendants, in the absence of legal advice, refusing to make any arrangement regarding them, the Court decided to proceed with the case. Further evidence was then led for the prosecution, defendants declining to crossexamine the witnesses. Mr Howell stated that he did not feel competent to undertake the conduct of the case for the defence, "and the further hearing of the

case was then adjourned till 14fcb, January next, being the day appointed for hearing the charge of wilful destruction of property brought on behalf of the Maoris against the parties who were concerned in pulling; down the fence latelj erected around the reserve. On Boxing Day a large gathering of people assembled to witness the Caledonian games. The weather was brilliant, but too hot, so much so that the shelter afforded by the lofty quick hedge around Mr Howell'e paddock, where the games were held, was eagerly sought by the spectators, amongst whom I remarked with pleasure several visitors from Invercargill. The programme occupied the entire dav, and, as mi#bt have been expected from the great heat of the weather, Mr Longford's refreshment booth was well patronised. While the greatest enjoyment and hilarity prevailed, it is pleasant to add that the proceedings ! were characterised by the utmost good I humor and decorum throughout. It was I generally acknowledged that the gathering was the most Baecessfal yet held in Riverton, both as regards the attendance of spectators, and the number and excellence of the competitors.
