THE WINTON RACES.
Second Day, Friday, Bee. 27. The weather thta day waa a decided improvement upon that of the first, the sun being obscured the greater part of the time. It was, however, very close, patting one in mind of the " Turkish bath" business. The attendance at the course waa hardly ao numerous as that; of the first day, but was rendered . more pleaoing by a good sprinkling of the fair Bex. In addition to the Jockey Club's programme, pedestrianism added an extra attraction, Mr H. Mayo, with his usual liberality, giving the handsome amount of 10 soys. to be run for in a handicap race, open to all comers, the celebrated long-distance runner, A. Austin, putting in an appearance, also H. Hodgson, a pedestrian of no small reputation in this and neighbor' ing provinces, the latter receiving 100 yards' start in a mile race, and terminating in a dead heat, whereupon the final decision of the contest was postponed till the 3rd prox., at the show grounds, Inrercargill. Another race was got up for 3 soya (subscribed by the onlookers) for a 100 yards' spin, wherein a local ped., 8. Kelly, ran, together with the former pair, Austin giving Kelly 10 yards and Hodgson 8 yards' start, the latter after a very fast spurt winning by about 2 feet. The foot races caused considerable delay in getting through the advertised programme. The following are the eventß as they came off : — Town Plate of 15 soys — Distance, 3 miles. Weight for age.
