INDIA AND THE EAST.
The steamer passage rates between India and Australia have been increased from £30 to £40. Lord Northbrook is winning golden opinions for hie statesmanlike utterances and his frankness and hospitality. Sir Philip Wodehouse and Lord Hobart are both actively engaged in their duties. The telegram giving the result of the Derby race was transmitted in two minutes to India. The volunteer movement is increasing. At Calcutta, rifle, cavalry, and artillery corps have been formed. The Straits colonies have been united with Hong Kong in one military command under a major-general. The population of Japan by the last census was 37 millions. Hurricanes were experienced off Mauritius and the Cape during March and April.
