SOUTH AUSTRALIA.

Adelaide, October 13. The Legislative Assembly has passed a vote for defraying the cost of forwarding samples of South Australian produce to India. The Attorney.G-eneral has introduced a new Insolvency Bill, assimilating the law to that in force in England. He has also introduced a bill to abolish imprisonment for debt.

A purse of 80 sovereigns was presented yesterday to Captain Grainger, in token of the subscribers' admiration of his bravery in saving the Balclutha. Captain Grainger takes round the Alexandra on her present trip to the Sound. The Catholic clergy and laity yesterday presented Bishop Shiel with £620 towards defraying his expenses to Rome. Messrs "Walls and Wills have offered the Government to contract for the new harbor between the outer bar and the present semaphore jetty, on a promise of certain facilities being given them. They promise to provide accommodation for the discharge of vessels of from 2,000 to 3,000 tons. I October 14. The show of stock to-day was splendid. Mr C. B. Fisher took all the prizes for merino rams. Two hundred ounces of Barossa gold are exhibited, purchased since Friday. The Agricultural Show was most successful. Sir James and Lady Edith Fergusson were present. His Excellency gave away the prizes. The attendance was very large, and the whole proceedings contrasted favorably with former years. It is reported that Mr Carr intends moving on Tuesday that the Government bring in revised Estimates effecting a general reduction in salaries. The news from the Far North is unsatisfactory on account of the great want of rain. Oct. 18th. A mob of fab cattle is shortly expected to arrive overland from the Gulf of Carpentaria. An underwriter's association has been successfully formed. His Excellency Sir J. Fergusson has invited by circular a number of gentlemen interested in colonial produce to meet him on Wednesday next for the purpose of conferring on the advisability of transmitting to India samples of Soutk Australian produce. A great deal of interest is being taken in the supplementary Huat Club Races, to come off next Saturday. The corn market is very firm ; 5s lOd is offering for wheat, but no sellers at that figure. Sales are reported at 5s Hid to 6s for export. Oct. 19th. The Government has notified its intention of inftrndngiing a_hilJ_ for-ftflrting cnn. siderably to the present free-list ~of imports. In the meantime, the discussion on the Estimates has been postponed. The motion of Mr Carr, for referring back the Estimates for further reductions has been negatived. The weather has changed to a drizzling rain. The corn market is dull, Californian advices via Sydney having checked the upward tendency. Wheat is now offering at 5s lOd.
