ITALY.

A deputation of Milanese citizens j have presented an address to the, Pope, expressing their devotion and thanking i

his holiness for the elevation of their fellow citizen, Monsignor Borromeo, to the Card'nal late. The ' Osservature Romano' contradicts the recent disquieting rumours relative to the health of the Pope. His holiness, says that paper, is in the enjoyment of excellent health. A military convention for the repression of brigandage has been concluded between the military authorities of the province of Naples and the commander of the Pontificial troops on the southern Pontificial frontier, whereby the military conventions existing previously to Oct., j 1867, again come into force. On April 14 a general strike took place of the workmen at Bologna. Tha workmen paraded the streets armed with stones, and compelled all the shopkeepers to close their shopa. They broke the

windows of the Town-hall. The troops , were called out, and after a third summons the workmen dispersed. The police arrested the editor, manager, and i head compositor of the radical journal, ' L' Amico del Popolo.' The strike continued on April 15. The troops patrolled the streets. The Prefect and Mayor of Bologna issued proclamations exhorting the workmen to cease their illegal demonstrations. The greater number of the men subsequently returned to their occupation. At a popular Democratic meeting, it was resolved to suspend the strike for the present, to petition Parliament against the heavy burden and unjust distribution of the income-tax, and to solicit the immediate release of the persons arrested.
