THE PAPAL STATES.
On Palm Sunday, April 5, the Pope officiated at St. Peters. He blessed and distributed the palms to the cardinals, prelates, and members of the diplomatic body. His holiness enjoys good health. It is expected that the remaining Erench division will shortly take its departure for Erance. The officers have received orders to prepare for leaving. The mass for the soul of the late King of Bavaria was solemnised at Rome, on March 28, in presence of a large congregation, including many persons of distinction, and about fifteen of the cardinals. The service was celebrated by Monsignor de Merode, and Signor Visconti . afterwards pronounced an eloquent eulogy on the deceased, mentioning some curious traits in his character, and some unpublished writings from his pen. The King of Naples, regardless of the slight he received in being omitted from the number
invited, was among the first to enter the church. Cardinal Andrea was also present, though he only accepted the invitation on the understanding that he should be assigned a place apart from the other cardinals, and accordingly he sat by himself in the gallery. Cardinal Andrea has resolved not to associate in public with his brethren of the Sacred College, or to take part in any pontifical ceremony, j It appears that the Pope has positively refused to restore him his bishopric and abbey ; the other day on being reminded of his promise to Monsignor Antisi and Cardinal Bilio, he Baid to Cardinal Andre, " I could on no account give you back these dignities, because I now know your character, and know you will always be in opposition to those conservative priests who are most devoted to the Holy See." On April 9, tbe Pope, after assisting at mass in the Sixtine Chapel, gave his blessing to the people from the great Loggia of the fagade of St. Peter's. The Pope's voice was powerful and distinct. Eifty thousand persons were present, and his holiness was cheered. The Fope subsequently washed the feet of thirteen poor priests, and served them at dinner according to custom on Maundy Thursday.
