THE TAY STREET RESERVE.
Mr LUMSDEN moved that a respectful address be presented to his Honor the Superintendent, recommending him to take such steps as he may deem necessary to have that block of town land marked on the plan of the town of Invercargill, as a reserve for public gardens, as bounded on the east by Nith-street, on the north by Tay-street, on the west -by Clydestreet, on the south by Forth-street, withdrawn from the uses for which it was originally set apart, and created an additional block of town laud to the extent of 66 feet from Tay-street, to be open for sale under the provisions of the Waste Lands Act, 1565. The central portion of the said block of town land to be reservedas site forapublicgeneralmarket." In moving the resolution he pointed out that the reserve in question, it was generally agreed, was unlit for the purpose for which it had .been set apart. If it was built upon, it would be a great protection to the properties in Tay-street, that now suffered so severely from the violent gales which prevailed. It was in the heart of the city, and should be sold for building purposes. At considerable length he advocated • the adoption, and stated that all the property-holders he had consulted gave it their support. Mir T. M. CLERK seconded the motion. AnanimateddiscussionensuedjinwhichDr Menzies, Messrs Cuthbertson, Pearson, Johnson, and others took part, and upon it being put to the House, was lost. A division was called for, and resulted as follows: — Ayes — Messrs Lumsden, T. M. Clerk, Swale, Johnson, and Dr Menzies. Noes— Messrs Blacklock, Wood, Guthbertson, Pearson, Crerar, Nurse, Clerk, and Howell.
