Messrs. Stables, Straker and Co., in their monthly circular, thus report on the trade with New Zealand : — " New Zealand. — A slight increase is apparent in the exports of the past mo^th, compared with its predecessor, the respective figures being £175,084, against £171,742. Auckland appropriates £62,120 of the past month's total, and Otago £68,472. Since commencement of the year, the aggregate value amounts to £956,193, against £832,931 in corresponding period of 1863. The Times of 26th July has the following : — "At the first half-yearly meeting ofthe Bank of Otago, held to-day, Mr. Elder in the chair, it was stated the paid-up capital of the bank has become locked up by tlie colonial manager subscribing for the whole of a loan* of £110,000, on debentures issued by the Province of Soutliland. The directors regret the circumstance, but trust that the difficulty thus occasioned will soon be surmounted." Our Dunedin files are to the 17th inst. The Times of that date reports a3 follows : — " Business during the past month has been quiet but steady, and with a continuance of the present fine spring weather, wo may now look with confidence for a gradual improvement in our markets generally, and especially in upcountry account. Stocks of most descriptions of merchandise are becoming greatly reduced, and with light imports during the mouth and moderate shipments advised as now afloat, merchants need be under uo apprehension in regard to the future. The only important failure during the month is that of Mr. S. Jones, our largest hotel proprietor. His liabilities are stated to exceed £50,000, but of this sum only about £6000 may bo regarded as trado debts, in which 10s. in tho pound has been paid. The balance is chiefly due to two banks. The gold escorts continue to show a fair return ; this month they sum up 26,726 ozs. As regards the flour market, prices may be qucted as follows : — Adelaide, first brands, £26 to £26 10s. ; country do., £24 10s. ; to £25 ; Chilian, £23 to £21 ; Tasmanian, £23 to £24. Tbe shipments from England to Melbourne aud Sydney will not influence our markets. Sugars. — The hohlers of a portion of the cargo, ex Commodore, and also the Fawn, placed them at good rates by auction. The limited stocks in the market induced buyers to come forward freely. The whole of the parcels ottered were sold, samples of brown bringing £50 ss. to £30 15s. ; fine counters, £36 to £36 10s. j grey crystals, £30; white crystals, £3S 15s. fo £40. Somo small shipments are coming to hand from Melbourne — however, they will not ail'ect our market. Biiand V.— In Martell's and Hennessy's bidk, no transactions of any magnitude ; rates are rather lower for these brands. In second class brands, rates have given way ; as low as 7s. 6d. has been taken. Martell's ca'so, light duty, 265., in bond ; ditto, large, 28s. do. ; Hennessy's, 305., scarce. Whisei", in bulk, extremely dull of sale, the last quotations are scarcely obtainable now. Case wliisky cannot be placed in any quantity. Kirkliston continues to be offered at 75. ; Saucel do., 6s. 6d. ; other brands at similar rates. Rm. — Stocks are not heavy, but our consumption small. A parcel of proof was placed at 2s. 9d. ; 8 to 10 o.p. at 3s. 3d. Geneva. — Stocks light, and chiefly held by ons or two houses. JDKZ, 13s. sd. to 14s. ; VH, 10s. 6d. to lis.
