SALES BY AUCTION.
The Auction Sales during the present month have been comparatively unimportant — if we may except that of tho cargo of the wrecked s.s. Scotia, at the Bluff, which has lasted for three days. At all these sales tho prices realised have been very low, and cannot be taken as any criterion of the value of goods in legitimate trading. Several lot 9 of horses and drays, &c., have been disposed of. Good staunch horsea havo brought from £30 to £40 ; inferior and middling, from £12 and upwards. At Messrs. Taylor and Marchant's sale to-day, the following prices were realised for horses with drays, viz. : — £12 103., £18 103., £20 10s., £21 ; marc and Bpring cart, £26 ; 1 mare, £19 103. ; 1 Yankee waggon, £7 55. ; a team of working bullocks, with, dray and yokes, was knocked down at £60. •■ / Messrs. Taylor and Marchant held a sale of the extensive stock-in-trade of Mr. John Hamilton, general merchant, Clyde-street, on the 9th inst. The following are a few of the prices obtained : — - Teas — Congou, 130s. to 140s. ; do., half-chests 755. ; do., quarter-chests, 28s. to 305. ; do., hysonskin, in chests, 70s. Stjgaes — Crushed loaf, English, 6d. to 6£d. per Ib. ; Java, 4£d. to 5d. ; Manilla, 4d. to 4&cL Butter — Tasmanian, 12£ d. to 14d. per Ib. Raisins, 7£d. per lb. Soap, 335. 6d. Allotment No. 4, of subdivision of section Ifo. 1, of .block 56, of Invercargill, -with four-roomed house (close lined, calicoed and papered), 24 ft. x 20 ft., and ■ with. double chimney. Price, £97 10s. ,- .. Messrs. Carey and Gilles sold by auction, on the • Jetty,- on the 14th irist., the cutter Maid of Southland for £36, and a smaller one, named Garibaldi, for £8. Thereafter, in the Prince of Wales Hotel, two allotments of land in Esk-street, as follows: — . Portion of Section 4, block II with a frontage to Esk-street of 30 ft. by a depth of 80 ft/ for £22 10s. Allotment frontage to right-of- way, of 30. ft. x 80 ft. in depth, in the same section, for £10 10s. On the 30fch ult., Messrs. Carey and Grilles disposed of, by public auction, in the long' room ol the Prince of -Wales Hotel, the wreck of the unfortunate barque, Star of Victoria. There was a numerous attendance on the occasion ; but notwithstanding the \ capital condition of the vessel, it only being two years out of the builder's yard at Aberdeen, the price obtained was comparatively small. The hull, spars, rigging, sails, chains, and anchor, were put up in one lot, and knocked down to Mr. G. W. Binney for £170. A boat, measuring eighteen to twenty feet in length, was purchased by C. Murray for £7 10s. ; and another of ( similar dimensions, but with sails in addition, by Mr. Ellenbcrg for £10 10s. Messrs. Mueller and Geisow hgld a sale by auction, on the Bth inst., in then* Auction Mart, Tay-street, of town sections in Invercargill and Campbelltown. The following were the prices obtained : — Section 11, block IV, fronting Gorestreet, Campbelltown, and within a short distance of the jetty and railway terminus, sold for £72. Section 25, block IV, Campbelltown Hundred, containing 50f acres, and with a frontage of 18 chains to the Campbelltown Road, brought 245. per acre. Half of section 1, block I, fronting Leven and Spey streets, Invercargill, brought £92. Section 2, block I, with two houses thereon, £175. The good will and lease of part of section 12, block 11, being site of the Provincial Cafe, corner of Tay and Kelvin Streets, ' was sold for £50. There 13 a clear income of £50 a year on this property, it being primarily let at £50 per annum, and subsequently at £100. «. ■
