COMMERCIAL INTELLIGENCE.

Southland Time 3 Officb, Friday Evening. The total amount of Revenue collected at the Customs for the past two days has been as follows: — Yesterday, £124) 17s. 4d. ; and to-day, £60 18s. lOcl. In all, £165 16s. 2d., being duty paid on a3 follows : —

Transactions for the month have beon extremely limited, with the exception of a few Bales by auction. The prices realised at these sales, however, can scarcely bo quoted as the rates ruling. With the oxception of flour, none of our articles of import can be said to have yielded a profit to the importer. Sugars, which have ruled high in tho adjoining colonies for some time, have at last become firm, when on ordinary principles they should bo on tho decline, having fallen considerably in tho Melbourne market — our chief port of supply. Indeed, prices quoted cannot be implicitly relied on in a market so depressed, and where cash, in tho majority of eases, may command goods almost under cost price. However, this state of matters, it is fully expected, will be but of transient duration. When our railway works are again in progress, and our trade with the Lake District re-established on a more healthy footing, mercantile affairs will be placed in a more desirable position. It is- well known that Invercargill must, from her position, always command the lion's sljaro of tho Lake trade, and when railway communication with the Northern Districts is opened up, this will bo great beyond doubt, besides being otherwise of immense importance in increasing tho inland traffic of the presently nearly-inaccessible portions of our own Province. In consequence of the rise in the prico of ilour, bakers havo considered themselves warranted in raising tho price of the 4-lb. loaf to 2s. Butchers' meat, "which a short time whs reduced in price, is now again belling at former rates.
