ORIGINAL CORRESPONDENCE.

WE DO NOT HOT.I) OUnSEi7VE,S RESPONSTHLE l-'OR TIIK OI'INTO.VS EXPRESSED ISY OUH COItIIESPOXDEXTS. To the Editor of the lin'orcargill Tim-ex, Pill, — I was surprised to see, tho oilier day, an article in the Rot<tlt!«n<l Neivs. b-- its Riven-ton correspondent, finding great t.-iult with the Provincial Government for making the road by the Upper Ford instead of by the Apparcma Bridge. Now, I know Mr Fenton Ccillo ' most of tho parties interested in River ton together an*! explnined to them his views, but at tho same tini* leaving the choice of either road in their hands. The Government, unquestionably made a great mistake in nnt metalling the Apperema Bridge approaches from terrac* to ti Trace in summer, tho cost of which, at that time, would have been comparatively small, and would also — the road being dry and sound — have made a jjoo<l job of it. At the time Mr Fenton was consulted it was too lute, the road having broken up in many places. I sincerely hope the Government will not let the ensuing summer pass without making the road, but take warning by their winter's experierience. One hundred pounds properly expended in summer goes as far as £1000 in winter. I am, Sir, &c, P. L. Francis. Invercargill, August 10, 1S("3. To the. Editor of the lnrereargill Times. Sir, — Hearing that the informers have made use of my name in connexion with the sly grog cases now pending, as having, as they term it, '*' Put them on the lay," I beg to state through your valuable medium that it is a most unwarrantable faheliood. Ido not know the men, and never to my knowledge have I spoken to them. By kindly inserting this you will greatly oblige Yours respectfully, A. 11. PUKTTELICOW.
