MATAURA NOTES.
[From our own Correspondent.]
On Friday evening last a return draughts match was played between members and non-members, the latter winning by one game. The result proved a veritable boil over, as it was fully anticipated the members would win easily. This should have been the case had they all played up to form. The cricket season opened on Saturday last, with a good muster of players. The match between sides chosen by the captain and deputycaptain resulted in a win for the coptain’s side by six runs. Ho sensational scoring was done, the bowling being too good for the batsmen. Ho doubt the bumpy state of the pitch favoured the bowlers, as batsmen were in dread of the ball rising and striking them in the face. Something will have to be done to improve the ground, otherwise there will be no pleasure in playing, while at the same time it makes it rather dangerous to be safe. If cricket is to be a success here members would need to do something in this matter at once. A football match took place here on Wednesday afternoon, between a Gore and local junior team, resulting in a decided win for the home team by 15 points to nil. The game throughout was all in favour of the home team, the Gore boys were never in it. Our local dairy factory has resumed operations, and the supply of milk is coming in steadily, and gives promise of being in excess of previous years. The weather, with the exception of a couple of cold blustering days, has been very good, the last day or two exceptionally so. In consequence of this our farmers are all busy getting on with their grain sowing. Business still continues dull, nothing startling going on in our midst. Building appears to be at a standstill—little or nothing doing.
