Country News

OREPUKI,

[From, our own Correspondent.]

Spring is with us once more, and though a late one, it has now set in in good earnest. Grass is beginning to show green, while the gardens and orchards are coming on very nicely. Our dairy factory will begin taking in milk next Monday, and there is every prospect that the milk supply will be satisfactory. Mining matters are rather quiet, but as the water supply has until lately been very good, fair returns will be the rule. The Orepuki Mining Association held their annual meeting recently, and among other matters decided to raise funds to equip a prospecting party to give the west side of the Waiau River a good trial for gold or other minerals. There is no doubt ahout the presence of gold in that locality, but hitherto prospecting has been of such a desultory nature that a thoroughly equipped and wellorganised party need have no fears as to the result of a tour in the far west.

The cricket season will be opened by a practice next Saturday, and as the Club is pretty strong-, they should have a good chance in the coming matches.

We are well used to see cheap trains run to Orepuki, but it is seldom that one is run from Orepuki. However, cheap fares will be issued for the band contest, which will no doubt be taken full advantage of. Oct. 3.
