WINTON.
[?Frora Our Own Correspondent.] The local branch of the Independent Order of Oddfellows, M.U., celebrated their twentieth anniversary last Wednesday by a concert and ball. As was expected, both parts of the programme, and especially the former, were crowned with success. The hall was crowded, and the affair was car-
ried out in a manner that reflected the .utmost credit on all concerned. Per. Sec. Bro. Cole made an A 1 chairman. The concert was carried through without a hitch. The following ladies and gentlemen from Invercargill took part in the concert —viz., Misses K. Kirwan and M. Morrison, and Messrs T. J. Anthony, W. D. Smith, E. R. Godward and W. Mcol, all scoring a big success. The local talent consisted of Misses M. Lindsay, M. Hishon, and Messrs J. Wilson, G. McCormack, and J. McLeod. The accompaniments were well played by Misses A. Kirwan and K. Mclnerney. Fully fifty couples took part in the ball which followed. The string band supplied the music. Mr R. Jamieson catered in first-class style, and Mrs Whyte dispensed the good things. Mr J, Campbell (the committee’s energetic chairman) officiated as M.C. to the end of the chapter —about five o’clock on Thursday morning. The racecourse reserve, consisting of 200 acres, was submitted to public competition for a term of seven years last Wednesday by Mr Todd. The bidding started with six shillings per acre per annum, and was kept spiritedly going until it reached the satisfactory figure of 16s 9d an acre, considering that Mr J. Keith (the present lessee) has had it at 10s o|d per acre. It is to be hoped that Mr A. Mathewson, to whom it fell, will do well with his venture.
