THE FROZEN MEAT TRADE.
Ten thousand carcases of frozen meat are being sent from the Southland Frozen Meat Co.’s Matanra works to Port Chalmers, where the steamer Kaikoura is loading. A special train left on Wednesday night with 2525 carcases; another last night with 3300 ; and a third will be despatched on Sunday with 3300 ; the balance going forward by ordinary train. We have to thank the National Mortgage and Agency Co., local agents for the Shaw, Savill and Albion Co., for a card giving some interesting particulars re the frozen meat trade. From this we learn that for the six months ended. June, 884,409 carcases of sheep, and 429,995 of lamb, together with 105,247 lb of beef, were exported from the colony. Of this, 39,226 carcases of sheep and 73,002 of lambs were despatched from the Bluff. The total exports of frozen meat for the six months ended June; amounted to 69,878,786 lb. For the year 1882 the total was only 1,707,328 lb.
