SOUTHLAND TRADES AND LABOR UNION.
A very useful adjunct to the Southland Trades and Labour Union is their reading’ room and library. The charge for membership is extremely moderate, 7s 6d a year, or 2s 6d per quarter ; and in return for this small outlay a person can have the pick of nearly 1000 volumes, in which fiction, science, history, travels, and treatises on present day problems, are well blended. There is also a sprinkling of works of a technical character, dealing with carpentery, engineering, etc. In addition to the books, which have lately been housed in handsome cases, there are a number of Home and Colonial newspapers and periodicals, The place is open on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday nights from 8 to 10, and those so disposed can have a game at cards, draughts, etc.
