MATAURA.
(From our own correspondent)
Things have been very quiet in our township during the last week. Only one sensation has to be chronicled, due to a report which somehow or other got abroad to the effect that the paper mills were closing for an indefinite period. This, lam happy to say, is nut the case. They have only shut down for a short time to admit of some alterations being made, after which the manufacture of white printing paper will be added to the lines hitherto turned out. May they succeed, is everybody’s wish. Last Saturday a lad named Walton had his jaw broken by a kick from a horse.
A shooting competition, the prizes for which were donated by some of the wholesale houses, took place last Saturday. The proceeds go to the Presbyterian Church. There were a lot of entries, and some really good shooting, the winners turning up in Messrs 5- Stewart, Shanks’ Bros., and Gr. Dempster.
