LAKE JOTTINGS

(From our own correspondent.) Weather frosty. The last of the threshing finished, and 12,000 bushels of Crown Terrace (Arrow) wheat sold to a Dunedin firm of flourmillers at 2s 3d per bushel (bags) delivered at Frankton by the purchaser. The Premier Mine, Macetown, is turning out abundance of good stone, and a cake of 121bs was lately banked. The Phoenix Mine, Bullendale, is turning out more gold-bearing stone than the average. The Sandhills dredge, Upper Shotover, has been giving excellent returns of late, but the frost has stopped its working for the last week. Mr D. A. Brodie, of draughts fame, paid the Lakes a visit lately, and played a large number of games in the various townships. Several wins and draws were scored against; him. Mr W. Jenkins,’ merchant, Arrowtown, dwelling house of 7 rooms was burned to the ground last Sunday night. The fire is supposed to have originated from a stove. The insurance will not cover the loss sustained. Miss Millard has been appointed teacher to the Macetown school in room of Miss McWilliam appointed to the Orepuki school. The prospectors of the Asbestos Company, Gentle Annie Creek, are still working away. They have opened up three seams to a depth of 4ft, and the asbestos continues the same as at the surface. MrS. K. Carswell, merchant, Arrow - town, is about to remove to Mataura to open a similar business there. The hills have a thick coating of snow just now. July 18, 1894.
