Monday last was a very busy day with us on the wharf, the vessels Jlawkes Bay, Tulune, Waihora, Douglas, Delmira, and Jcrfalcon all working cargn During the month of August the shipping returns for Bluff Harbour were—inward, 25 vessels of 18,337 tons, outwards, 23 vessels of tons. At the last meeting of the Harbour Board Mr A. Walker was appointed engineer of the Board’s tug Awarua. There were fourteen applicants for the position. A lecture was delivered at Ocean Beach on Wednesday evening by the Rev. Mr Gardiner on “ Books, and how to use them,” and -was much appreciated, Vocal and instrumental solos were also given, and a most enjoyable evening spent. Mr 3. Fisher (Invercargill), presided. The juveniles forming the Drum and Fife Band have progressed so far with their studies that they are now qualified to take a turn round the town of an evening. It is not long since Mr Joosten took the matter in hand, and the progress the boys have made reflects great credit on themselves and their teacher.

The barque Antares was towed to sea on Tuesday, and set sail to a fair wind. The brigantine Annie Hill arrived, from Grey mouth on Wednesday. The Tyser line’s s.s. Hawkes Bay sailed for London via Lyttelton on Friday, taking from here a large cargo of mutton and general merchandise.
