Country News

GORE. Mr John O’Meara, a candidate for the Wakatipu electorate, has been visiting the Riversduie, Waikaia and Ghatton portion of the district, making, I hear, a favourable impression. Mr O’Meara is a young and push Log man, and has filled the position of chairman of the Lake County Council for a num.. er of years, to the general satisfaction of the County. Great pleasure is felt among temperance people that the Electoral Pill has at last become law. The president of the Franchise League, on receipt of the news, telegraphed to Sir John Hall, tendering him their hearty thanks for his labours on their behalf. . Stepis are being taken to have the ladies of the district enrolled. I regret to have record the death of sister Mary Columba, of the local convent, at the early age of 21 years. For sometime the deceased lady had been in indifferent health, but not until a few days before her death had fears been entertained for her safety but the changeable climate appears to have been too severe for her, and the end came on Friday last. The funeral took place on Monday, and was one of the largest seen in the district. A petition is being largely signed asking Mr a, J. Pease to allow himself to become a candidate for the Wakatipu seat, but it is doubtful whether the request can be aceded to owing to Mr Pease’s early departure on a visit to the Home country. The weather here at last shows signs of settling. The last three or four days have been'all that could be desired. On a recent visit through the country I noticed that farmers are everywhere making the most of the time, and seed sowing is going on apace, except in a few very flat places where the late east rains have made the ground too wet to plough or sow. The roads are all in capital order ; hedges being trimmed and put in order, and everywhere there is an air of comfort and stability.
