MATAURA. A very enjoyable social took place in Humphries Hall recently, when about 40 gentlemen assembled to present Mr A. Clark, who has been appointed head teacher at Slopedown and Otaraia (half-time schools) with a silver inkstand as a small token of their esteem and good wishes. After the presentation, several speeches and songs were given. Refreshments, which were kindly supplied by Mrs Jas. Galt and Mrs Hamilton, were also handed round. After the usual votes of thanks to the chairman, and to Mrs Humphries for the use of the hall, the company closed with “ Auld Lang Syne.” The members of the Ivy Dancing Club are closing their season with a fancy dress ball on the 29th inst. The lady members of this Club deserve special mention for the assistance they have rendered the committee in making it so successful. The music has been supplied by them all the season, and they have very kindly offered to cater for the ball also. Mr and Mrs Black are engaged to supply the music, and judging by the interest all the members are taking in the matter, it is sure to be a success. The second machine at the freezing works is ready to start work, and will be running in a day or two. The works here will now be capable of freezing from 600 to 700 sheep daily. The electric light will also be used as soon as the belting is attached to the electric machine from the shafting. All the engineers have been very busy of late fitting up this machine. The chief engineer (Mr Hamilton) deserves credit for the excellent work that they have done. Only a short time back the machine was trucked up from the Bluff, and to see it now that it is fitted up you would scarcely believe it to be the same machine. Mr Begg, who recently returned from a visit to the Home Country, has entertained and instructed the members of the Mutual Improvement Society at their two last meetings with a capital account of his travels, receiving at the close of the second lecture a well-merited vote of thanks.
