LUMSDEN.
Our Mutual Improvement Society meets every alternate Monday night. At the last meeting there was a good audience. Hie subject of the evening was an essay on “Socialism,” given Ijy the Rev. Mr J. Blackie. The theme was well handled for the time that is allowed in our society for essays. There were also several readings, recitations and songs given bv members, and special praise is due to Messrs Thomson and Dawson for their character sketch, which was well acted, considering that the performers were amateurs. Mr W. Todd was also present from Invercargill, and made a few well-chosen remarks, which greatly added to the enjoyment of all prcßjnt. , Our great annual gathering (the Oddfellows concert and ball) is coming off on the 25th inst. The Lodge has got quite a host of singers from all parts to assist at the concert, along with our own talent; and for the dance they have secured the services of the wellknown players, Rendel (picillo) and Simmers (violin), from Tapanui, so that a treat is in store for all.
