MATAURA NOTES.

The new paper mill is coming into evidence. The large cast-iron pillars have been set upon concrete piles. . The Mataura Debating Society held their usual meeting on Tuesday night—Mr Maw in the chair. The business was a debate on the question “ Should Home Rule be granted to Ireland.” Messrs Hamilton, Brugh, and Macandrevv supported the affirmative, vyhilst Messrs Lowden, Davidson, and Mac Gibbon took the negative side of the question. Both sides argued well, but on being put to the meeting, “ Home Rule ” carried the day, the voting being 54 to 15. A great many, however, did not vote. During the evening ;a flute solo was nicely played by Mr John Carroll, and Mrs Diack sang “ Killarney ” very well. The Ivy Dancing Club held an extended dance on Wednesday night. The floor was

in capital order, and the music by Mrs Penny, Misses .Cameron (2), Shanks, Fowler, MacGibbon (2), Williams, Crofts, and Messrs Black and Dempster, was all that could be wished. The club intends to close the season at an early date with a fancy dress ball. The school concert, which takes place on the 25th, promises to be of a very high order. Vocalists from other districts have promised their assistance, while the local talent arc also in active practice.
