GORE.
Arbor Day was unfortunately wet, nevertheless a few ardent tree-planters, with spade on shoulder, put in an appearance on the Domain opposite the Town Hall, and were met by the members of the Board. The chairman (Mr Beattie) before beginning operations, took occasion to address them on thy object of their meeting. The Borough Council was represented by Mr Brett, the Gore and Gordon schools by Messrs Golding and Gilchrist, accompanied by a number of their pupils, The Mayor had proclaimed a half-holiday for the occasion, but this proclamation was disregarded by the business portion of the community, and I think rightly so, seeing that there is already an established half-holiday on Wednesday, and I think the Council were wrong in not fixing Arbor day for Wednesday, when a larger number would have been present. The clearing sale of Mr Robert Dixon’s last Saturday was largely attended, and most successful. Horses brought very high prices—up to £29 10s ; milk cows up to £5 17s fid; heifers. £2 I7s fid. Implements were readily bought up—ploughs, £7; seedsower, £ls ; chalfcutter and bagger £4O. I understand an information has been laid against one of our hotel proprietors for allowing a game of “ Yankee Grab ” on his licensed premises. A branch of the Christian Endeavour Society in connection with the Gore- Presbyterian church was formed on Wednesday last, when about 20 young people gave in their names as active members, and from the enthusasim manifested we believe a large society will be established. Mr Mclvor was elected secretary, and meetings are to be held on Sunday mornings at ten o’clock. The new building for the Athenamm has at last been handed over, and is now open to subscribers, and should prove a great convenience and comfort to the members. All that is now required is a (large increase in subscribers Aug. 10.
