WOODLANDS.
We are enjoying a phenomenally fine spell of weather for this time of year. Fogs are rather prevalent, but as they clear off early in the day, they cannot be said to constitute bad weather. The roads are in good condidition, although in places they would be the better of a man to look after them a little before a bad spell does come. The carting of grain was well overtaken while the season and roads were good. Our dairy factory has been shut for a few weeks now. The season, X believe, was not nearly so suitable for dairy purposes as the preceding on. The rabbit preserving works are in active operation. In addition to the usual supply of “ bunnies ” (which seem to be mainly local) the proprietor has gone in for mutton canning for export.
Local draughts players (thanks to the generosity of Mr Tait in granting them one of his cottages rent free) have now a comfortable place in which to hold their usual weekly practices. Musters should now be large, and the club’s playing status improved. Very few went from here to the races on the Queen’s Birthday. With the exception of one tradesman, the holiday was not generally observed here. That man went shooting, but whether he closed up on account of loyalty to Her Majesty, or for love of .sport, I won’t undertake to say.
